Governor Malloy Signs Domestic Violence Bill
On Friday, August 5th, Governor Dan Malloy ceremonially signed into law bill 6629, which improves Connecticut’s response to domestic violence. This law puts several important measures in place, such as the continuation of funding to allow round the clock on-site staffing of domestic violence shelters. The new law also eliminates a former provision which exempted people in dating relationships from arrest should a violent situation occur. Additionally, it allows Connecticut teenagers who are victims of dating violence to obtain restraining orders against abusive partners.
Joining Governor Malloy at the bill signing were Karen Jarmoc, CCADV’s Interim Executive Director, domestic violence agency directors and members of the Speaker’s Task Force on Domestic Violence, including Representative Mae Flexer, who chairs the Task Force.
