CCADV Statement Regarding Ansonia Domestic Violence Homicide

Wednesday, November 10, 2021

The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) is deeply saddened to learn that a woman in Ansonia was the victim of an intimate partner homicide. This marks the 9th known intimate partner homicide in Connecticut this year.

"While we do not know any specifics related to this tragic event, what we do know is that nationally an intimate partner homicide or attempted homicide is the first act of violence for between 28-33% of victims," said Meghan Scanlon, President & CEO, CCADV. "Often the behaviors that precede homicide are jealousy, control, and stalking. We urge individuals to consider speaking with an advocate when they begin to experience these coercive behaviors, even before they turn physical."

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior used by one partner to gain and maintain control over the other partner. It is complex and takes many forms, including emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and technological. Domestic violence does not discriminate - it impacts people regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or education. When a victim takes steps to end a relationship, this is the most dangerous time as the abuser is likely to feel a loss of control and escalate their behaviors to regain control.

“We want everyone who may be experiencing abuse in their relationship to know that they are not alone,” said Esperina Stubblefield, Director of Domestic Violence Services, BHcare, which serves the New Haven and Valley areas. “Abusive, controlling behaviors can be subtle but escalate over time, becoming more physically violent. Whether you have questions, need resources, or just want someone who will listen without judgement, our advocates are available 24/7.”
